The Paradox of Failure

Writer's picture: Natalie (She/They)Natalie (She/They)

In life, human beings do not take kindly to failings, but the paradoxical truth of the matter is that we often learn more from failure than we learn from success.

Failure and disappointment are some of the most common fears, especially in young adults today, and I feel that they are not discussed as commonly as they should be. In every action, there will always be doubts that lurk in the back of the mind. All of the what-ifs and distrusts that come with the fear of making the wrong decision.

I find that, especially when it comes to writing, I am constantly doubting my skills and fearing for my audience's reaction. Will they not like this piece? Is my title clickbaity enough to draw attention but not too much as to be cringy? Is my topic too bland?

That worry of failing will always be there, lurking just out of sight. But, I think it is also important to remember that failing is not always such a bad thing. Yes, it will suck in the moment, but when have you ever learned something without making a mistake? Failure provides us with learning experiences for the future, and very rarely will you ever make a mistake that will mess up your life long-term.

I manage my fear by using it as a driving force, propelling me toward my goals. I take the anxiety and stress built up over the years and craft it into something I can use. More often than not, those fears actually serve as inspiration in my writings.

I absolutely agree that the concept of failure and disappointments should be more widely discussed, rather that treated as something to fear and avoid. I know that if we see something going wrong in the future, particularly in writing, we may use any means necessary to maneuver around it. It really can be an enlightening experience, so while success is ideal, we can only get there by our understanding of failure. It reminds me of the quote from Wayne Gretzky, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." If we see a lack of success as a negative, we won't take chances, and, thus, never learn or improve.
