The Conundrum of Gender

Updated: Mar 6, 2023

From my experience, gender plays a fairly large role in the voice of a writer. In modern society and throughout history, depending on what sex a child is at birth, they will thus be raised to fit a specific set of guidelines. Whether that is a conscious or unconscious decision made by the parents or guardians of the child, society has deemed it just to implement stereotypes and stigmas around certain aspects of one's gender.

This is specially made true when the concept of the non-binary and trans communities comes about. As a person who identifies as non-binary, where the gender norms of society don't necessarily apply to me, I have experienced firsthand what it means to be perceived in a certain way by our society, which makes people look twice. As someone who was raised female, I was taught to be soft and caring, and courteous of those around me in a way that I feel most cis-gendered males may not have been taught.

People born female tend to go through life experiencing different hardships and stigmatizations than those born male. We know what it is like to not feel safe to go outside at night, to know better than to ever travel alone in an unknown area, and how to carry a dang good one-sided conversation on a fake phone call.

Society raises the two binary genders so differently which often further gives each person a voice that often reflects the way in which they were brought up. However, I hope to see society break away from these stereotypical norms the more educated each generation becomes.
