In this week's reading from the text Bird by Bird, I liked what Lamont said about finding your voice and how taking a multitude of other people's styles and morphing it into your own. On page 186, the text claims that “you cannot write out of someone else's big dark place; you can only write out of your own.” The best way for writers to be understood and achieve their voice is to tell their own stories. Only once a person gets comfortable telling their own story can they ever truly hope to convey another's.
Flipping ahead, Lamont discusses the multitude of struggles and anxieties that come with the publishing industry. She quotes the movie Cool Running, Referencing a line that she claims sums up the entire relationship between mental health and publication. “if you are not enough before the gold medal, you will not be enough with it.” I agree that this is a very powerful line because it speaks to ordeals outside of simply the publishing industry. This phrase could be applied to anything in life, be it sports, writing, or even studies.
With the inclusion of technologies and platforms like TikTok, new authors are finding it easier to get their novels recognized and published than ever before. Because of inflation, the prices of books have increased dramatically, and unfortunately, they appear to keep rising with each new disaster.
Apologies if this week's post is a bit short or seems to be all over the place. I have a major migraine, which does not lend well to normal brain function.
