The winter holidays are comprised of many traditions, from watching parades to decorating trees to taking silly family photos. Traditions comprise the entirety of the holiday season in many households.
I might be biased in my opinion, but homemade cranberry sauce is far superior to the canned gel found in a store. There is no real comparison in flavor and quality and I will die on that hill.
My favorite holiday tradition is making homemade cranberry sauce with my mother. Every year since I was three or four years young, I have helped my mamma make cranberry sauce for the family Thanksgiving dinner.
I can fondly recall balancing on a chair by the stove as I painstakingly stirred the sauce, being careful to avoid the splattering of hot sugar and juice leaping from the pot. Since I was a bit of an accident-prone child, there were many a sugar burn my mother had to bandage, but I was also stubborn and insisted on helping anyway.
Now that I am older, I am able to make the sauce on my own, but my mamma still hangs out. Standing in the kitchen with her, discussing all the family gossip is the highlight of my year.
Someday, when I have children of my own, I would love to be able to share this tradition with them and continue using my mamma's recipe. We have had more than 20 years to perfect our tradition, and I hope that in 20 more, it will be even better.
